Rebecca Davies is a Botanical Artist, based in Ho Ho Kus. Rebecca studied the formal technique of Botanical Illustration under the guidance of Lucy Smith at Kew Gardens, London. In January 2021 she commenced the world-renowned Society of Botanical Artists diploma course, graduating with distinction in May 2023. Since then, Rebecca has exhibited widely across the US and in Europe, with both the British and American Societies of Botanical Art. Rebecca enjoys working with live subjects, preparing very detailed drawings and tonal studies, before starting to paint in watercolor and gouache. She aims to capture the distinctive botanical characteristics and unique personality of her subjects, often incorporating magnifications and dissections.
Join Rebecca as she discusses the values and uses of both botanical art and botanical illustration and some of the artists and botanists that have inspired her. Rebecca will explain how she goes about creating her paintings, including initial subject selection, drawing and color matching in her sketchbook, experimenting with compositions, choosing appropriate media and executing the final piece. She will demonstrate her painting technique and share some paintings from her most recent exhibitions.
This program will take place at the usual Garden Club Meeting location of 400 Warren Ave, Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ 07423 (The Ho-Ho-Kus Community Church).
